The secret to any Instagram post going viral can now officially be revealed. Me, a wedding celebrant, and Chloe, a wedding videographer, have discovered the secret sauce when it comes to creating engaging social media content. ONLY JOKING!! / NOT JOKING!!! I wish we really knew, but something has worked recently… And here’s what we know…
I had the great pleasure of getting to know David and Marika and to prepare their totally bespoke wedding ceremony. The brief was clear from the get-go with this fun-loving couple and brilliant match. They wanted a truly celebratory affair, with lots of energy and to ensure that their guests felt part of the proceedings. So….on their wedding day - at the superb Bay Tree Hotel in Burford - a ring bearer lottery was the order of the day!
Chloe, their most excellent videographer from Euphoria Films, was busy prepping her gear in the ceremony space, as was I, and she cleverly captured me concealing the ring under a guest’s chair. What followed later was a wonderful moment where a most obliging guest found the rings and, despite his surprise, expertly delivered them to us for the ring exchange, beaming throughout and being cheered on by everyone in the room.
And so what sets this apart from other wedding insta reels and captured moments I wonder? Well, yes, the post is brilliantly edited by Chloe - full kudos to her. But what really shines through is the joy. The joy of the surprise, then anticipation. The shared joy of novelty during a wedding ceremony, everyone’s excitement and willing engagement to play along, and HAPPINESS! So, insta algorithms aside, my conclusion is that where there is joy their is also often community and a cheerleading one at that! And I quite literally make it my business to bring both to every wedding day ceremony that I’m lucky enough to be a part of.

So what is a celebrant led ceremony and what are my wedding day ceremony options?
Well, you have lots! Before you book a registrar for your venue - licensed or not - it’s worth knowing...
You have a statutory right to complete your legal registration of marriage at a Registrar’s Office in advance of your wedding day - your fabulous celebration. You can do this in what’s called a simple 2+2 Ceremony for around £60. (Called a Statutory Marriage or Civil Partnership on most local council websites).
These are really popular with couples - cost effective too in the grand scheme of things - and allow you to have the memory-making wedding ceremony of your dreams with an experienced and award winning, trained and qualified celebrant of your choice, like me, without all the legalities to stress about on the day.
It’s where you and your partner attend the Register Office with two witnesses - your favourite people perhaps - make the basic statutory legal declarations and sign your marriage certificate. It’s often a short mid-morning appointment so you can head off for a celebratory lunch afterwards, and even start to get on with your post marriage ‘wedmin’ - such as changing names on passports if that’s what you are planning.
Then… I will be honoured and able to declare you married on your wedding day, at the venue of your choice, as part of a totally bespoke and personal wedding ceremony – the fun part! And as I only book one wedding a day there is no pressure on timings or needing to worry about doing or saying the wrong thing. That’s because with a celebrant-led ceremony there are no rules. You can choose any special location - inside or outside whatever the weather - and lead the way for the tone and style and content that suits you and your wishes.

And, while 2+2 ceremonies still aren’t widely known about or advertised by some venues or Register Offices, what counts is that your venue really won’t mind what wedding ceremony you choose to have.
